Rare $10 Million Patek Philippe "South America" Heads to Phillips Geneva Auction

The upcoming Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: XXIII, set for May 9 and 10, 2026, is being headlined by a timepiece that has not been seen in public for nearly forty years. The Patek Philippe Reference 2523 in 18k yellow gold, featuring a "South America" cloisonné enamel dial, is one of the most significant watches to hit the market this decade.

While the official estimate is "in excess of CHF 5,000,000," market experts and recent private sales of similar world-time models suggest the final hammer price could easily challenge the $10 million mark.

The Patek Philippe Reference 2523 "South America"

The Reference 2523 is a dual-crown world-time watch that allows the wearer to track time in 40 different cities at once. Launched in 1953, it is widely considered the "golden age" of Patek Philippe design.

  • The Dial: The center features a map of South America handcrafted in cloisonné enamel. This process involves using gold wires to outline the continent and filling the spaces with enamel powder before firing it in a kiln.

  • The Rarity: Only two examples are known to exist in yellow gold with this specific South America map. This particular watch has been off the market since 1988, making it a once-in-a-generation acquisition.

The Rolex "Dragon" Reference 6085

Also appearing in the sale is a 1952 Rolex Reference 6085, known as "The Dragon." This watch represents a rare moment where Rolex prioritized high-art over utility.

  • The Dial: The dragon motif was created by Nelly Richard, a master enameler at Stern Frères.

  • The Rarity: Only five Rolex watches with a "Dragon" dial are known to exist. Because each of those five is a different reference number, this watch is technically a unique piece. Its estimate sits between CHF 500,000 and 1,000,000.

Modern Highlights: F.P. Journe and Roger Smith

The auction also features key lots from the world’s most famous independent watchmakers.

  • F.P. Journe Resonance 'Souscription' No. 18: This is an early brass-movement watch from the series that helped launch Journe's career. It carries an estimate of CHF 450,000 – 900,000.

  • Roger Smith Series 3: This is the first time a Series 3 by Roger Smith has ever been offered at an international auction. Hand-built in pink gold, it is one of only five in existence.

The Al Thani 'Hieroglyph' Patek Philippe

Lot 22 is a Patek Philippe Reference 3998J commissioned by the late Qatari Prince, Sheikh Saud bin Mohammed Al Thani. Instead of numbers, the dial features Egyptian hieroglyphs that spell out "Newton" and "Helmut." It was commissioned as a gift for the photographer Helmut Newton, though it remained in the Prince's collection.
