Surely, when someone mentions Bell & Ross, your mind immediately conjures up images of burly fighter pilots, glowing green instrument panels, and chunky square watches large enough to double as a coaster for your pint of bitter. Subtlety, historically speaking, hasn't exactly been the brand’s primary calling card, but that’s precisely why it has acquired such a dedicated following since 1992.

It would be silly not to mention, however, that we’re seeing the industry pivot toward smaller cases and much more nuanced, thoughtful designs. Bad news for the Bell & Ross you’re thinking? Well, not exactly, because the new Bell & Ross BR-05 Blue Diamond Eagle 36mm (although admittedly a bit of a mouthful to say), represents a genuinely fascinating detour for the Parisian brand. The watchmaker has swapped the aggressive, tactical cockpit dashboard for the romance of the night sky. And it actually works brilliantly.

First things first, let's talk about the dimensions. At 36mm in diameter, this is the baby of the BR-05 family. The brand is pitching this latest release as a ladies' watch, leaning quite heavily into words like "femininity" and "dreamlike" in its official press release, but in today’s watch enthusiast climate, I’d say 36mm is arguably the perfect unisex sweet spot. A square case always wears larger than a traditional round one, however. It all boils down to simple geometry and surface area. A 36mm square Bell & Ross is going to have the wrist presence of a 38mm or even 39mm traditional round watch, but will slip under a cuff beautifully without losing its all-important industrial silhouette.

Does the squared-off shape of this 100M water-resistant stainless steel case clash slightly with the delicate, jewellery-inspired vibe of the dial? Not really. Any friction you’re likely to pick up on is exactly what gives the piece its character. The alternating satin-brushed and polished steel case keeps things grounded, ensuring it doesn't drift entirely into the realm of pure fashion jewellery. Deep down, this is still a sports watch. If you aren't terribly familiar with aventurine, it’s entirely different from the natural quartz mineral that shares its name. This stuff is man-made magic. Legend has it that back in the 17th century, on the island of Murano in Venice, a rather clumsy glassmaker accidentally knocked some copper filings into a vat of molten glass. Instead of getting sacked on the spot, he ended up discovering one of the most stunning materials used in modern watchmaking.

The result is a deep, rich midnight blue surface speckled with shimmering metallic flakes that imitate a clear starry night sky, as seen in this & Ross BR 05 watch. The downside is that it’s notoriously difficult to work with. Aventurine glass is fragile and highly sensitive to temperature changes. It’s also prone to cracking. The largest diamond takes the prime spot between 10 and 11 o'clock, representing Altair - the eagle's head and one of the brightest stars in the Northern Hemisphere. Eleven additional diamonds serve as the hour markers, bringing the grand total to eighteen stones across three different sizes.

If you prefer your automatic watches to fly entirely under the radar, this isn't the piece for you, but the execution is so well handled that it rescues the watch from being overly ostentatious. Bell & Ross designers have driven into the fragile aventurine with micron-level precision, setting custom four-prong brass mounts into it that elevate the dial.

The Movement

Underneath all that cosmic sparkle beats the BR-CAL.329 automatic movement. It’s not an in-house movement but a modified Sellita SW-300. It’s impressively slim and easy to service, not to mention reliable, offering a respectable power reserve. But as with all automatic watch movements, it’s eventually going to wind down and stop, so rather than resetting the time and manually winding the mainspring every time you decide to wear it, you could pop it onto a Barrington watch winder and keep it ticking over nicely.

Final Thoughts

Bell & Ross has spent the better part of its existence focusing a large chunk of its entire reputation on conquering the skies with its stern-looking altimeters and dials that look like they belong in a Cold War interceptor. The Bell & Ross BR-05 Blue Diamond Eagle 36mm is different. It was never meant to be worn on a NATO strap while yomping through a muddy trench. Naturally, it might appease every hardcore military-watch enthusiast, but that’s just the beauty of this celestial-inspired watch. It’s entirely comfortable leaving the crowd behind to simply admire the view.
