Patek Philippe Watch Art Returns for Its Seventh Edition

Patek Philippe introduced the Watch Art Grand Exhibition format in 2012 as a way of presenting its watchmaking heritage, contemporary collections and specialist craftsmanship outside Geneva.

The first exhibition was held in Dubai, followed by Munich in 2013, London in 2015, New York in 2017, Singapore in 2019 and Tokyo in 2023. Across those six editions, almost 165,000 visitors attended.

The Tokyo exhibition occupied more than 2,500 square metres, displayed nearly 500 timepieces and attracted more than 60,000 visitors. Milan will expand the format further.

The 2026 edition will occupy almost 2,900 square metres beneath the approximately 30-metre-high dome of the CityOval. The exhibition will be divided into 15 themed areas and will recreate elements of several locations associated with Patek Philippe, including its historic premises on Rue du Rhône, the Plan-les-Ouates Manufacture and the Patek Philippe Museum.

Inside the Patek Philippe Watch Art Exhibition in Milan

The 15 areas are designed to cover different aspects of Patek Philippe's history and contemporary production.

The Current Collection Room will display the Manufacture's current collection, while the Manufacture Room will explore component production, movements and the research and development involved in creating them.

In the Watchmakers Room, visitors will be able to observe watchmakers at work and see operations and techniques that would ordinarily take place inside the Manufacture.

Chiming watches will have a dedicated area called the Master of Sound Chiming Watches Room. Another room will focus specifically on Patek Philippe's Super Complications.

Rare Handcrafts will form another major part of the exhibition. The 27 pieces created for Milan include wristwatches, pocket watches and Dome clocks decorated using techniques such as miniature painting on enamel, cloisonné enamel, hand engraving, wood micromarquetry, hand-executed guilloché and gemsetting.

Artisans will demonstrate some of these techniques during the exhibition, giving visitors an opportunity to see how the decorative work is carried out.

Rare Handcrafts Created Specifically for Milan

Two unique Rare Handcrafts pieces previewed ahead of the exhibition illustrate the range of techniques represented in Milan.

The Burano Pocket Watch Ref. 992/193J-001 is a unique yellow-gold pocket watch inspired by the Venetian island of Burano. It combines cloisonné, flinqué and paillonné enamel with guilloché and hand engraving.

Its decorative composition uses 70 shades of enamel. Gold and silver leaf beneath the enamel create reflections on the water, while taille-douce engraving on the caseback, bezel and case band draws inspiration from Venetian lace. The dial features a wave-pattern guilloché beneath translucent blue flinqué enamel.

The presentation stand is also extensively decorated. It is set with 108 spinels totalling 1.15 carats and 102 sapphires totalling 1.18 carats, and rests on an oval blue quartz base covered with carved rock crystal.

A second unique creation, the Oranges de Sicile Dome Ref. 20179M-001, depicts a Sicilian landscape using two visual planes. Orange trees appear in the foreground in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, while Palermo is depicted in miniature painting on enamel in the background.

Approximately 15 metres of gold wire weighing 26.8 grams were used for the cloisonné work, alongside 49 colours of transparent, opalescent and opaque enamel. Each plate required between nine and eleven firings at temperatures of 900 to 910°C.

The hour circle takes inspiration from a Sicilian church clock and uses blue Roman numerals with openworked leaf-shaped hands. Inside is calibre 17''' PEND, a mechanical movement wound by an electric motor.

More Than 90 Museum Pieces Travel to Milan

More than 90 pieces from the Patek Philippe Museum will form another major part of the exhibition.

The selection draws from both the Antique Collection, which documents watchmaking from the 16th to the early 19th century, and the Patek Philippe Collection, which covers the Manufacture's heritage from 1839 onwards.

Several exhibits have direct connections with Italy. Among them is the pocket watch of Umberto I of Savoy, produced between 1896 and 1897. The yellow-gold watch has a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals for the diurnal hours and red Arabic numerals for the nocturnal hours. Its caseback bears the coat of arms of King Umberto I and is set with rose-cut diamonds.

Patek Philippe's archives record that the watch was delivered on 4 August 1897 to Musy Padre e Figli, Court Suppliers in Turin.

Another exhibit predates the foundation of Patek Philippe. Dating from around 1830 and made for the Italian market, the pocket watch uses key winding, a Moricand & Degrange movement and a cylinder escapement with a ruby cylinder. A map of northern Italy decorates the back of its engraved gold and champlevé enamel case.

A World Time Ref. 1415 HU from 1948 will also be shown. The rose-gold watch features a rotating bezel indicating 41 locations representing 24 time zones and a cloisonné enamel dial depicting the eastern hemisphere. Its rose-gold hands were made by Louis Cottier.

Grandmaster Chime and Patek Philippe Super Complications

The Super Complications section will bring together some of Patek Philippe's most technically ambitious historical creations, including the Calibre 89, Star Caliber 2000 and Grandmaster Chime.

Among them will be the Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175R-001, unveiled in 2014 to commemorate Patek Philippe's 175th anniversary.

Only seven examples were made. Six were sold to collectors and enthusiasts, while the seventh, numbered 5,175,000, became part of the Patek Philippe Museum collection.

Reference 5175 incorporates 20 complications and six patented inventions. Its five striking modes on three gongs comprise a grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie, minute repeater, acoustic alarm that strikes a preselected time and a date repeater that sounds the date on demand.

The manually wound calibre 300 GS AL 36-750 QIS FUS IRM consists of 1,366 parts. The watch also incorporates an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display.

Its engraved rose-gold case is reversible using a patented rotation mechanism incorporated into the lugs, allowing either of its two dials to be displayed. In 2016, the Grandmaster Chime joined the regular collection as Reference 6300.

The exhibition will also include the Calibre 89, developed for Patek Philippe's 150th anniversary and incorporating 33 complications and 1,728 components. The Star Caliber 2000, created for the new millennium, has 21 complications and 1,118 components.

Watch Art Milan 2026 Dates, Hours and Registration

The Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milan 2026 will run for 17 days, from Friday, 2 October through Sunday, 18 October.

It will take place at CityOval at CityLife, formerly Palazzo delle Scintille, in Piazza Sei Febbraio, Milan.

Admission is free, but visitors must register. On-site registration will also be available, although advance booking is recommended. Visitors can select their preferred date and add accompanying guests when registering, and multiple reservations can be made for those wishing to return on different days.

Opening hours are:

• Monday to Thursday: 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

• Friday to Sunday: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm

• Sunday, 18 October: closes at 8:00 pm

• Last admission: one hour before closing

Free audio guides will be available in Italian and English, together with a web app accessible on smartphones.

With around 500 timepieces and objects, live demonstrations, 27 specially created Rare Handcrafts pieces and more than 90 museum exhibits, Watch Art Milan 2026 will bring several different aspects of Patek Philippe's watchmaking together under one roof.

The Milan edition will be the largest Watch Art Grand Exhibition Patek Philippe has staged to date.
