I received this winder only about a month ago, so I cannot yet comment on long-term durability. That limitation aside, I am very happy with the product.
I purchased it to replace multiple Orbita winders, which themselves were beautiful pieces of wood furniture but no longer provided enough capacity as my watch collection grew. While my Orbita winders were quiet and allowed individual programming of each head, this 24-head Barrington winder is at an even higher level.
I keep the winder in our bedroom, so quiet operation is crucial. With the door open, you can very faintly hear a winding head turning, but with the door closed the unit is virtually silent, even when multiple heads are operating. Even more helpful is that the winders cycle for only 12 hours each day, followed by 12 hours off. I simply turned the unit on in the morning, so the daily cycles are completed before we go to sleep.
Programming each head is straightforward, either from the console or with the remote control. The fingerprint lock works flawlessly, was easy to set up, and provides a useful additional level of security. The case itself is beautiful and feels exceptionally well made, with a piano-black exterior and carbon-black interior. At approximately 40 pounds, it has a substantial, solid, and very well-constructed feel.
The winder is expensive, but in my opinion appears comparable in quality while costing less than similar-capacity winders from other premier brands such as Orbita, which I have previously owned, and Wolf.
The individual watch holders took a little getting used to compared with the simple cushions in my previous winders, but they hold the watches securely, position them at an appropriate angle, and are readily adjustable for different watch sizes. I do find myself being careful with the hard plastic rims of the holders when placing or removing a gold watch because of a theoretical concern about scratching the watch surface. I should emphasize, however, that I have not actually experienced any scratches.
Customer service has been excellent. Before placing the order, I called with several questions and immediately reached a knowledgeable representative—without navigating a painful voicemail tree—who patiently answered everything I wanted to know and gave me the confidence to spend a substantial amount on the unit.
The winder arrived in the United States from the UK within a week. It was extraordinarily well packed, in a heavily padded box inside a custom wooden shipping crate, and arrived without a scratch or other damage. One winding head initially operated intermittently. I called the company and a representative walked me through the very simple process of opening the back and tightening a wire connection that apparently had loosened during shipping. An unexpected benefit was seeing the mechanism inside the cabinet: it was high quality, neatly organized, and modular, and appeared specifically designed to allow an owner to replace an individual winding head easily should that ever become necessary.
I have only two minor criticisms or suggestions for improvement.
The more important is that the front glass is highly reflective. With lights or windows in the room, reflections can make it surprisingly difficult to see the watches clearly. For a display winder of this quality and price, I think anti-reflective or “museum” glass would be a worthwhile improvement. I am currently looking into applying a third-party anti-reflective film to the existing glass.
My second criticism is purely aesthetic—but aesthetics are, after all, part of the reason for buying a display winder rather than simply keeping watches in winders inside a closed safe. The silver rings surrounding each winding head compete visually with the watches themselves. I would prefer a flat-black surround, as used by some other luxury winder manufacturers, which allows the watches to stand out more prominently.
These are relatively minor criticisms and do not detract from my overall satisfaction. Based on my experience during the first month, the Barrington 24-watch winder combines excellent build quality, exceptionally quiet operation, flexible individual programming, thoughtful design, and outstanding customer service. I am very pleased with the purchase.
