George Daniels-Modified Rolex Datejust Sells for Over $500,000 at Auction
Rolex collectors are accustomed to seeing exceptional prices achieved by rare Daytona, Submariner or GMT-Master references. A stainless steel Datejust would not normally be expected to join that list.
However, a Rolex Datejust Ref. 16220 recently achieved an impressive result at FutureGrail's May auction, selling for $520,000 before buyer's premium. The final price significantly exceeded the pre-sale estimate of $100,000 to $200,000 and established a new benchmark for a Rolex modified by the late master watchmaker George Daniels.
More Than a Standard Datejust
At first glance, the watch appears relatively ordinary. Produced around 1988, it features the familiar Datejust formula of a stainless steel case, white dial and Jubilee bracelet.
Its significance lies not in the Rolex itself, but in the work carried out by George Daniels, widely regarded as one of the greatest horologists of the twentieth century.
Daniels was among the last craftsmen capable of creating an entire watch by hand, including the case, dial and movement. His approach to hand-building watches became known as the "Daniels Method", a process that continues to influence watchmakers today.
The Importance of the Co-Axial Escapement
The modified Datejust incorporates one of Daniels' most important inventions: the co-axial escapement.
For decades, Daniels worked to address one of the long-standing challenges of mechanical watchmaking, namely friction within the escapement. His co-axial design reduced sliding friction between components, helping to improve long-term stability, reduce lubrication requirements and maintain accuracy over longer periods between services.
The invention is widely considered one of the most important technical developments in modern mechanical watchmaking.
After years of promoting the concept, Daniels eventually partnered with Omega, which industrialised the co-axial escapement and introduced it into serial production in 1999. Today, the technology remains a defining feature of Omega's contemporary Master Chronometer movements.
A Rare Piece of Horological History
What makes this Datejust particularly unusual is that the co-axial escapement was personally created and installed by George Daniels himself.
According to information surrounding the sale, the modification was likely carried out during the mid-1990s, before the technology entered large-scale production. As a result, the watch represents a rare link between traditional Rolex watchmaking and one of the most important technical breakthroughs of the modern age.
Examples directly modified by Daniels are exceptionally scarce, making them highly desirable among collectors interested in horological history rather than conventional Rolex rarity alone.
Strong Demand for Historically Important Watches
The result also highlights the continued demand for watches with exceptional historical significance.
While attention often focuses on rare sports Rolex models and headline-grabbing Patek Philippe references, collectors continue to compete for pieces connected to important figures in watchmaking history.
FutureGrail reported participation from more than 40 countries and achieved a complete sell-through of the auction catalogue. Against that backdrop, the Daniels-modified Datejust emerged as one of the sale's standout results.
The result highlights the appeal of watches that combine historical significance, technical innovation and a direct connection to one of watchmaking's most important figures.
