Philippe Stern, Honorary President of Patek Philippe, Dies Aged 87

Philippe Stern, Honorary President of Patek Philippe and father of current President Thierry Stern, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was announced on 14 June 2026.

Philippe Stern played a central role in shaping the company through some of the most challenging decades in the watch industry's history. His leadership helped preserve the independence of Patek Philippe while reinforcing its position among the most respected names in Swiss watchmaking.

Leading Patek Philippe Through the Quartz Crisis

Philippe Stern became Managing Director of Patek Philippe in 1977, during the height of the Quartz Crisis. At a time when many traditional Swiss watchmakers were struggling to adapt to the rapid growth of quartz technology, he remained committed to mechanical watchmaking.

Even before taking the role, Stern had been involved in one of the brand's most important projects. In 1976, he played a key part in the launch of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, a model that would later become one of the most recognisable luxury sports watches in the world.

Under his leadership, Patek Philippe strengthened its position as an independent family-owned company and continued to focus on long-term craftsmanship and watchmaking excellence.

The Creation of Calibre 89

One of the defining achievements of Stern's tenure came in 1989, when Patek Philippe unveiled the Calibre 89 pocket watch to mark the company's 150th anniversary.

At the time of its introduction, Calibre 89 was recognised as the most complicated portable mechanical timepiece in the world. The project demonstrated the brand's technical capabilities and reinforced its standing at the highest level of traditional watchmaking.

The launch of Calibre 89 remains one of the most notable milestones of Philippe Stern's leadership.

Building the Modern Patek Philippe

Philippe Stern also oversaw major developments beyond product creation. In 1996, he brought together Patek Philippe's Geneva workshops within a new manufacturing facility in Plan-les-Ouates.

His commitment to preserving watchmaking heritage was further demonstrated in 2001 with the opening of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The museum preserves not only the history of Patek Philippe but also important chapters of watchmaking history.

These projects reflected Stern's long-term vision of balancing innovation, production and historical preservation.

Championing Traditional Crafts and Quality Standards

Long before the preservation of traditional decorative techniques became a widespread industry focus, Philippe Stern actively supported rare artisanal crafts within watchmaking.

He also guided the development of the Patek Philippe Seal, the company's proprietary quality standard introduced in 2009. The seal became an important expression of the brand's commitment to maintaining its own standards of quality and craftsmanship.

The introduction of the Patek Philippe Seal further reinforced Patek Philippe's independent approach to watchmaking excellence.

A Lasting Legacy

Philippe Stern's influence can be seen across many of the company's most important achievements. From the launch of the Nautilus and the creation of Calibre 89 to the establishment of the Plan-les-Ouates manufacture, the Patek Philippe Museum and the Patek Philippe Seal, his contribution helped shape the modern identity of the brand.

His passing marks the end of an important chapter in the history of Patek Philippe, while the legacy he helped build continues under the leadership of the Stern family.
