Seiko Invites Fans to Choose the Design of Its Next Diver’s Watch

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of its first-ever diver’s watch, Seiko has launched a global initiative inviting fans to participate in the design of an upcoming release. Throughout July 2025, enthusiasts can vote on the dial colour of a new diver’s model scheduled for release in 2026. The campaign pays tribute to the historic 62MAS, which laid the foundation for Seiko’s long-standing leadership in professional dive watch manufacturing.

Seiko Invites Fans to Choose the Design

A Tribute to the 1965 62MAS

The original 62MAS (Ref. 6217-8000), introduced in 1965, was Seiko’s inaugural diver’s watch and the first in Japan to offer 150-metre water resistance. Its design featured a utilitarian layout, bold luminous markers, and a screw-down crown positioned at 3 o’clock. The model quickly earned the trust of professionals and military personnel, including use by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. The 62MAS also established a visual language that would influence the Seiko diver’s range for decades to come.

To commemorate this milestone, Seiko’s upcoming watch retains modernised functionality while echoing core design values: durability, clarity, and performance under pressure.

Confirmed Technical Specifications

The specifications of the forthcoming model place it firmly within the Prospex line, known for professional-grade reliability. Seiko has confirmed the following attributes:

  • Case size: 40 mm, a versatile and contemporary dimension

  • Material: Stainless steel, corrosion-resistant and robust

  • Crystal: Sapphire with anti-reflective coating, ensuring optimal legibility

  • Water resistance: Rated to 300 metres, exceeding ISO 6425 standards

  • Bracelet: Stainless steel with tool-free micro-adjustment clasp

  • Movement: 6R55 automatic calibre with a 72-hour power reserve and 3 Hz frequency

The 6R55 is part of Seiko’s next-generation mid-range movement family. It offers enhanced autonomy compared to its predecessors while maintaining a slim profile suitable for professional divers’ watches. The movement is regulated to maintain reliable performance over time, and features a hacking seconds function and manual winding capability.

Ocean-Inspired Colour Palette

The voting process focuses exclusively on dial design, with four colour options symbolising different phases of the marine day:

  • Orange: Inspired by the golden tones of sunrise at sea

  • Blue: Reflecting the purity of open water under midday light

  • Green: Evoking the shifting tones of the ocean at twilight

  • Red: Representing the fading warmth of the sun as it sets beyond the horizon

Each dial will feature a wave-texture motif, a subtle engraving technique Seiko uses to capture the dynamic character of water. This pattern has appeared in several special editions within the Prospex series and continues to resonate with collectors for its visual depth and thematic relevance.

Participation and Launch Timeline

The voting opened at 12:00 JST on 1 July and will run until 31 July 2025. Participation is open to fans worldwide via Seiko’s official website. Results will be announced later this year, and production of the winning version is expected to begin in time for a 2026 market launch.

Seiko has previously experimented with limited community engagement through regional boutique models and collector editions. However, this is the brand’s most inclusive design initiative to date, reflecting a growing commitment to dialogue with its enthusiast base.

By involving the public in the creative process, Seiko reaffirms its dedication to producing watches that honour heritage while embracing contemporary expectations. The upcoming diver’s model will not only celebrate six decades of technical achievement but also serve as a symbol of shared passion between Seiko and its global community.
