Lego for Luxury Lovers: The Bamford Mayfair 2.0 is the Ultimate Grown-Up Playground

Generate AI summary

A brilliant cure for the painfully boring sports watch.

When George Bamford first cooked up the original Mayfair watch, it was intended to be nothing more than a glorified courtesy car for the wrist, if you will. Clients would send their beloved Rolexes, Patek Philippes, and Audemars Piguets off to Bamford’s Mayfair headquarters for a blacked-out treatment and to soothe the inevitable separation anxiety that comes with handing over a priceless heirloom; George kindly gave them a chunky, asymmetrical quartz watch to wear in the interim. A rather funny thing happened, though…

Clients simply didn’t want to give them back. George Bamford hadn't exactly been trying for a cult classic, but congratulations were in order regardless; a bouncing, completely unexpected baby had just arrived. Fast forward to late last year, and the horological wizards at Bamford London decided it was high time to reinvent their accidental hero. Enter the Mayfair 2.0.

The Mayfair 2.0 is sharper, smarter, and more mischievous than its predecessor. Naturally, over at Barrington, designers spend the vast majority of their waking hours obsessing over the brand’s mechanical marvels, but every so often, a battery-powered interloper saunters into the room and collectors are forced to stop and pay attention. That seems to be the case here, because the Mayfair 2.0 models are vibrant, fun and a little bit bonkers.

An Inner Sanctum of Titanium

At the absolute heart of the Mayfair 2.0 lies a central chassis machined entirely from titanium. Why titanium, you ask? Because it’s incredibly robust, of course, plus its lightweight qualities likely rule some of the decision-making here. This metal core houses the movement, the dial, and the sapphire crystal assembly, acting as somewhat of a structural fortress for the timepiece.

By employing a sturdy screw-down crown, Bamford has ensured this inner module boasts a respectable water resistance of 100 metres, too. You could quite happily fall off a paddleboard in Cornwall wearing this, and the watch would survive the ordeal with more dignity than you. The models measure 40mm in diameter and stand at a height of 13.8mm off the wrist. Whichever way you look at it, titanium, with its hypoallergenic properties, I should add, provides the serious, grown-up engineering necessary to justify its £500 price tag.

Playing Dress-Up with Polymer

The Mayfair 2.0 is modular. It’s essentially Lego for the horologically inclined. Each watch arrives accompanied by four interchangeable outer cases, vibrantly coloured shells crafted from a high-density hybrid polymer that snaps securely over the titanium core. The operation requires no tools, either. No fiddly spring-bars or microscopic screwdrivers. You simply press, listen for a click, and suddenly you’re wearing a completely different watch. One moment you’re sporting an Electric Blue that looks perfectly at home on the teak deck of a Mediterranean yacht, and the next, you’ve snapped on a Viper Green shell that screams for a muddy weekend festival in Somerset. Bamford has famously stated that he wanted to give wearers the tools to switch their vibe instantly. That you did, my friend. That you did. And the message behind this watch? Don’t take yourself or your watch too seriously. Enough said.

It’s Quartz. And So What?!

Put the pitchforks down, pour yourself a stiff drink, and let us not be frightful snobs about this. Ticking away inside that titanium bunker is a Swiss-made Ronda 3540.D calibre. But listen. It’s a split-second chronograph movement that measures intervals down to 1/10th of a second. Scoff, you may, but if you ever find yourself needing to time the exact microsecond a perfectly boiled egg is achieved, this is unequivocally the tool for the job.

Cramming a mechanical chronograph movement of this complexity into the case would immediately punt the Mayfair 2.0 into a price bracket that completely ruins the accessible fun. Plus, you can leave it sitting idle in a drawer for three weeks, grab it on a frantic Friday afternoon, and it’ll be good to go.

A Chromatic Explosion

The dials themselves are an absolute visual feast, taking heavy cues from the vivid colour palettes that Bamford is globally renowned for. You can opt for Cocktail Pink, Electric Blue, Viper Green, or a stark, crisp White. The layout of each relies upon a classic 3-6-9 chronograph configuration, with a steeply angled chapter ring that bears the tachymeter scale (just in case you need to calculate your average speed while stuck in soul-crushing M25 traffic.

To complete the ensemble, the hour markers are generously filled with luminescent material, as are the broad, sword-style hands.  The brand also supplies the watch with a cool textile weave strap and an additional rubber alternative.

Concluding Thoughts

The Bamford Mayfair 2.0 is a tad eccentric, but it reminds us that watches are ultimately supposed to be fun. This is a loud, playful summer accessory that actively encourages you to mess about with it. Simply leave your mechanical beauties spinning happily on a winder and embrace the sheer joy of it. Bonus points if you dare to clash it with your best Hawaiian shirt.
