Exclusive: Schumacher Family Reveals Rare Watch Collection for Auction

In an unexpected turn of events, the family of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher has chosen to auction off a selection of his cherished personal watches through Christie’s flagship Geneva sale in May. Despite the limited updates on Schumacher since his skiing accident in 2013, this announcement has stirred significant interest among enthusiasts.

Standout Pieces: F.P. Journe 'Vagabondage' & Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

While the full list of items remains undisclosed, anticipation surrounds the unveiling of two standout pieces. Among them is a rare F.P. Journe 'Vagabondage', boasting a platinum case and a bespoke dial finished in the distinctive 'Ferrari red'.

Adorned with the prancing horse shield at nine o’clock and a depiction of Schumacher's race helmet at three o'clock, this timepiece commemorates his remarkable seven Formula 1 World Championship victories. Signifying a gift from Schumacher's mentor, Jean Todt, during the driver's final championship year, its historical significance is undeniable. Although Christie’s has refrained from providing a pre-sale estimate, expectations are high for it to command a price exceeding CHF 1 million, given its unparalleled uniqueness and historical context.

Another noteworthy piece sourced through Todt is a one-of-a-kind white gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak chronograph. Bearing the inscription 'J. Todt pour M. Schumacher, Noel 2003', this watch features a customized dial showcasing Schumacher's helmet and the iconic Ferrari prancing horse. With six stars adorning the 30-minute counter to symbolize Schumacher's six World Championship wins up to 2003, this watch is poised to fetch a price exceeding CHF 500,000.

Behind the Scenes: Family's Decision and Christie’s Role

Remi Guillemin, Christie’s European watch head, disclosed that discussions with Schumacher's family regarding the sale had been ongoing for two years. The decision to make these iconic timepieces available for auction stemmed from a desire to cater to collectors, Formula 1 enthusiasts, and fans of the renowned driver.

Despite Schumacher's association with Omega as a brand ambassador, his later collaboration with Audemars Piguet resulted in the development of the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher. Tailored to the demands of professional racing, this watch continued its production even after Schumacher's tragic accident. Priced at CHF 210,000 each, with a total of 221 examples made, it symbolizes Schumacher's enduring legacy in the world of motorsports.
