Applications Open for the Second Louis Vuitton Watch Prize for Independent Creatives
Louis Vuitton has officially opened applications for the second edition of its Watch Prize for Independent Creatives. Aspiring participants have until 15 April 2025 to submit their entries, continuing a tradition that began in late 2022.
Celebrating Independent Watchmaking Talent
The Louis Vuitton Watch Prize for Independent Creatives was established to honour the creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation of independent watchmakers. In an industry often dominated by large maisons, this biennial prize shines a spotlight on individual artisans who push the boundaries of horology.
Awarded every two years, the prize includes a €150,000 grant and a year-long mentorship with La Fabrique du Temps, Louis Vuitton’s renowned watchmaking division. Known for its expertise in complications and bespoke creations, La Fabrique du Temps offers winners unparalleled access to its knowledge and resources, helping them refine their craft and expand their potential.
The inaugural 2023 edition attracted 1,000 submissions from 15 countries. The first laureate, Raul Pagès, impressed the jury with his RP1 Régulateur à Détente, showcasing a sophisticated detent escapement mechanism rarely seen in modern watchmaking. His achievement highlights the prize’s goal: to celebrate bold technical innovations and elevate independent creators to the global stage.
The 2025 Selection Process
For the 2025 edition, entries must feature independently designed and crafted watches with a mechanical calibre, underlining Louis Vuitton’s commitment to traditional horological artistry. Quartz watches, reflecting a different philosophy of watchmaking, are not eligible for the competition.
The journey to the 2025 laureate follows a rigorous selection process:
- 15 April 2025: Submission deadline via louisvuittonwatchprize.com.
- July 2025: A shortlist of 20 semi-finalists will be announced, representing the best of global independent watchmaking.
- November 2025: The expert committee will evaluate the semi-finalists and select 5 finalists, using criteria such as design and aesthetics, creativity and boldness, technical innovation, finishing, and complexity.
Additionally, the committee will select five specialists to join the final jury panel, ensuring a diverse and expert perspective for the final evaluations.
A Spotlight on Mechanical Craftsmanship
The emphasis on mechanical calibres reflects the competition’s dedication to traditional craftsmanship and technical ingenuity. Mechanical movements, often seen as the pinnacle of horological skill, offer a rich canvas for innovation, from intricate complications to avant-garde designs. This focus reinforces the prize’s intent to honour artisans who master both the art and the science of watchmaking.
February 2026: The Grand Finale
In February 2026, the five finalists will present their creations to the jury, offering a final showcase of their ingenuity and craftsmanship. The jury, comprising some of the industry’s most respected figures, will then announce the next Louis Vuitton Watch Prize laureate. Beyond the grant and mentorship, the winner will join an elite circle of watchmakers recognised for their contributions to the future of horology.
Supporting Independent Watchmaking: A Louis Vuitton Legacy
Louis Vuitton’s initiative reflects a growing appreciation for independent creators in the watchmaking world. By providing a platform for exceptional talent, the maison not only highlights the diversity and innovation within the industry but also reaffirms its commitment to preserving the artistry of traditional horology.
For independent watchmakers, the Louis Vuitton Watch Prize represents not just a competition but a transformative opportunity to gain global recognition and unparalleled support from one of the most influential names in luxury.
