Record Result for Cartier London Crash at Sotheby’s Hong Kong
A rare Cartier London Crash in yellow gold has become the most expensive Cartier wristwatch ever sold at auction. The watch, believed to date from around 1987, achieved HKD 15,616,000, or approximately USD 1.99 million, during Sotheby’s latest watch sale in Hong Kong.
The result came during a watch auction session that lasted around 13 hours and concluded with total sales of USD 52.9 million.

Yellow Gold Crash Achieves Historic Result
The leading lot of the auction was a Cartier London Crash produced circa 1987 in a yellow gold case. According to available information, the watch is believed to be one of only three examples made to order that year.
Following nine minutes of telephone bidding, the watch sold for HKD 15,616,000, equivalent to approximately USD 1,993,539. The result established a new auction record for a Cartier wristwatch.
Strong Results for the “Shapes of Cartier” Collection
The Hong Kong sale also featured the historic “Shapes of Cartier” collection, comprising 82 vintage Cartier watches. The entire collection sold for seven times its combined pre-sale estimate.
Among the standout results was a Cartier London Tank J.J.C. Allongée from around 1992, which achieved HKD 5.76 million, or approximately USD 730,000, against an estimate of HKD 320,000 to 480,000.
Another notable result came from a Cartier London Tank Normale dating from 1967 to 1968. The watch sold for HKD 4.6 million, or roughly USD 587,000, compared with a pre-sale estimate of HKD 240,000 to 400,000.
