Looking at an antique pocket watch or an early pilot's watch, however, reveals a very different approach. Many of these timepieces feature oversized, rounded crowns that immediately stand out from the rest of the case.
Known as onion crowns, these distinctive winding crowns are among the most recognisable design elements in traditional watchmaking. Their generous size and bulbous profile were never intended as decorative flourishes. The design first appeared on pocket watches during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries before becoming common on early wristwatches converted from pocket watch movements. Because many of these watches lacked automatic winding systems, owners interacted with the crown every day. Comfort during manual winding therefore became an important design consideration.
Although the exact profile varies between manufacturers, the defining characteristic is the crown's rounded, bulb-like form rather than its diameter alone.
Why Watchmakers Developed the Onion Crown

Its broad curved profile increases the contact area between the fingers and the crown, allowing torque to be applied more comfortably than with a narrow cylindrical design. Deep fluting or knurling around the perimeter further improves grip by reducing the likelihood of slipping during winding.
Because the fingers naturally wrap around the rounded surface, users can apply force from multiple directions rather than pinching the crown between two fingertips.

Although both perform exactly the same mechanical functions, onion crowns differ significantly from modern crown designs.
A contemporary crown typically emphasises compact dimensions, water resistance and integration with the case. These priorities became increasingly important during the twentieth century as wristwatches replaced pocket watches and waterproof sports watches gained popularity.
The onion crown prioritises accessibility instead. Its larger dimensions improve handling but inevitably occupy more space and protrude further from the case.
This distinction reflects changing expectations rather than engineering superiority. Modern divers' watches, for example, often favour smaller screw-down crowns protected by crown guards because resistance to impact and water ingress takes precedence over manual winding comfort.

Materials and Manufacturing
Historically, onion crowns were produced from the same materials as the watch case itself.
Silver, gold and brass appeared frequently on pocket watches, while stainless steel became increasingly common during the twentieth century as sports and military watches gained popularity.
Traditional manufacturing relied on turning and milling operations before the fluting was cut into the outer surface. Modern CNC machining allows considerably greater consistency while preserving the characteristic rounded profile developed centuries ago.
Many luxury manufacturers subsequently apply satin brushing, mirror polishing or combinations of both finishes to complement the overall case design.
Despite advances in production technology, the essential geometry of the onion crown has changed remarkably little because its ergonomic advantages remain fundamentally the same.
Onion Crown vs Diamond Crown
Collectors sometimes confuse the onion crown with the diamond crown because both appeared frequently on antique watches.
The onion crown has a smooth, rounded profile with gently curved sides resembling the shape of an onion bulb.
A diamond crown, by contrast, features a more angular silhouette with faceted surfaces tapering towards the outer edge. Although both improve grip compared with simpler cylindrical crowns, they create noticeably different visual impressions.
Numerous other historical crown styles also exist, including pear crowns, pumpkin crowns and cone-shaped crowns. Each reflects different aesthetic preferences and practical requirements that evolved throughout the history of portable timekeeping.

The Engineering Compromises
While onion crowns offer excellent ergonomics, they also introduce several engineering compromises.
Their larger diameter increases the likelihood of accidental contact with clothing or surrounding objects. On wristwatches, particularly those worn on the left wrist, a prominent crown may also press against the back of the hand during certain wrist movements.
Creating effective water resistance can be more challenging because the larger crown requires correspondingly larger sealing surfaces. Although modern gaskets largely overcome this issue, many contemporary diving watches favour more compact screw-down crowns with integrated crown guards to reduce vulnerability.
These trade-offs explain why onion crowns gradually became less common as waterproof sports watches evolved during the twentieth century.

Although originally widespread, onion crowns are now primarily associated with historically inspired collections.
The IWC Big Pilot remains one of the best-known modern examples. Its oversized crown directly references the Beobachtungsuhren navigation watches supplied to the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War, while also making the manually operated movement exceptionally easy to wind.
Zenith's Pilot collection has long featured large onion crowns inspired by the company's early aviation instruments. Longines has incorporated similar designs into several Heritage models, while Oris, Laco, Stowa and Alpina continue to produce pilot's watches with crown profiles closely reflecting historical originals.
Pocket watches manufactured by Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and numerous nineteenth-century English makers also frequently display beautifully proportioned onion crowns, demonstrating that the design originated long before aviation gave it its modern identity.

Collectors value onion crowns for reasons extending well beyond appearance.
Their historical authenticity immediately connects a watch to an earlier period of horology when manual winding formed part of everyday life. Operating a large onion crown also provides a noticeably different tactile experience. The additional leverage, comfortable grip and smooth rotation often make winding feel more deliberate and mechanically engaging than with smaller contemporary crowns.
Many enthusiasts also appreciate the visual balance the crown brings to traditional pilot's watches and pocket watch-inspired designs. Rather than appearing oversized, it reinforces the historical proportions that define these watches.
Because the crown is one of the few components touched every day, its shape contributes significantly to the character of the ownership experience.
More Than a Distinctive Design Feature
