Seiko’s Latest Alpinist GMT: A Collector’s Dream for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Seiko has unveiled a striking special edition of its beloved Alpinist GMT, featuring a distinctive textured dial and a classic heritage-inspired colourway.
A Rugged Evolution of a Fan Favourite
The Seiko Prospex GMT SPB493J builds on the Alpinist’s legacy as an adventure-ready timepiece. While it is not the first Alpinist to include a GMT function—introduced in 2003—nor the first to showcase a textured dial, the combination of these features with the watch’s signature aesthetic makes this release stand out.
Exceptional Detailing
Intricate dial textures have long been a hallmark of Grand Seiko, but this model proves that Seiko’s more accessible timepieces can also incorporate such refined details. The ornate dial finish complements the robust design, reinforcing its suitability for rugged environments.
Inspired by Nature
The dial texture draws inspiration from the wing feathers of hornbills, tropical birds found in Southeast Asia. Upon closer inspection, the dial reveals an intricate pattern of overlapping grooves. However, from a distance, the matte black surface shimmers much like real feathers, adding a unique visual depth to the timepiece.

A Tribute to Alpinist Heritage
The colour scheme of the SPB493J is influenced by two of the most iconic Alpinist references: the SCVF009 from 1996 and the SARB017 from 2006. While the SARB017 showcased a deep green dial with a black internal compass bezel, this new edition reverses the design—featuring a black dial and an Alpinist-green bezel.
Notably, the hour markers have been subtly refined. Instead of the alternating triangular markers and Arabic numerals seen in earlier models, this watch includes eight dash indices, with numerals appearing at twelve, three, six, and nine. Additionally, the applied markers have sharper edges, offering a more cohesive contrast against the textured dial.

Built for Exploration
Despite its status as a special edition aimed at collectors, the SPB493J remains a highly functional field watch. First introduced in 1961 as the Laurel Alpinist, the range was originally developed for mountaineers, drawing inspiration from the Rolex Explorer I. Since 2020, the Alpinist has been part of Seiko’s Prospex line, denoted by the signature “X” on the dial.
The SPB493J shares design similarities with the SPB121, one of the key Prospex Alpinist models. Its durability features include 200-metre water resistance, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, Lumibrite hands and indices, and an internal rotating compass bezel.
Precision and Functionality
Mechanically, this special edition is comparable to the SPB377 production model. Both house Seiko’s 6R54 movement, which boasts a GMT complication. However, the SPB493J is the first Alpinist model to feature a black fixed GMT bezel, enhancing its travel-friendly functionality.
Limited Availability & Pricing
As with many exclusive releases, availability is limited. The Seiko Prospex Alpinist GMT SPB493J is exclusively sold in the Asian market for approximately $1,650. Furthermore, only 500 pieces have been produced, making this an exceptionally rare find.
For those fortunate enough to secure one, the watch comes in a decorative presentation box, accompanied by an additional black leather strap with white contrast stitching and a three-fold clasp.
With its blend of heritage design, modern functionality, and rugged durability, the SPB493J cements itself as one of the most compelling Alpinist models to date.
