F.P. Journe Quartz Watch Sets Record at Auction, Fetches $552,000
A record-breaking sale of the F.P. Journe Élégante 48 mm Titalyt MAMCO has drawn attention from the global watch community, with the unique model auctioned for a staggering $552,000. The watch was crafted in support of the Geneva Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO) and sold at the Phillips auction on September 18 during a special event marking the museum’s 30th anniversary.
This particular F.P. Journe model, distinguished by its titanium case with Titalyt® coating, became the highest-priced quartz wristwatch ever sold at auction. The final hammer price of CHF 470,000 (~$552,539) not only set a new benchmark for quartz watches but underscored the rarity and appeal of this exclusive creation.
The design is both minimalistic and artistic, featuring a monochromatic grey theme across the case, dial, and strap. However, its true uniqueness lies in the overlay of vibrant letters—A, R, and T—on the dial, a direct homage to a 1994 artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Nannucci. The letters are not only a tribute to the MAMCO’s artistic heritage but also serve as a coded reference to the core values of F.P. Journe: Authenticity, Rarity, and Talent.
Though the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, sources confirm the purchaser to be a private collector and philanthropist. All proceeds from the sale will go towards the renovation and expansion of the MAMCO, further enhancing its role as a cultural hub in Geneva.
This sale dethroned the previous record-holder, another model from the F.P. Journe Élégante collection, which was auctioned in support of breast cancer research. The Élégante series, known for combining high-end design with quartz precision, continues to redefine the perception of quartz watches in the luxury market.
