Exclusive: Michael Schumacher’s Watches Auctioned Amid Rising Medical Costs
Michael Schumacher, the legendary Formula 1 driver, saw his watch collection go to auction on May 14th amongst rising medical costs.
A 55-year-old seven-times world champion, his medical condition has very much been kept under wraps, however recent news of the auctioning of his watch collection has spurred comments on rising medical expenses.
This Tuesday, eight of Schumacher’s cherished watches were auctioned in Geneva at the world-renowned Christie's. As an avid watch collector, Schumacher’s timepieces garnered significant attention. The standout piece was a vintage pink Patek Philippe, fetching an impressive $2,711,500 (£2,150,761).
Among the auctioned watches was a custom platinum F.P. Journe Vagabondage.
This unique timepiece features an 18-carat white gold case with a red watch face adorned by a Ferrari logo and Schumacher’s racing helmet. It achieved a remarkable price of $1,646,700 (£1,306,162). Another notable watch was the white gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak chronograph, also customized with Schumacher’s helmet and the iconic Ferrari prancing horse. Six stars on the 30-minute counter symbolize Schumacher’s six world championship wins up to 2003.
The Audemars Piguet watch sold for $457,380 (£362,825). In total, the eight watches fetched over £3.5 million. Remi Guillemin, Christie’s European watch head, confirmed discussions with Schumacher’s family over the past two years regarding the decision to auction these timepieces.
The sale aims to cater to collectors, Formula 1 enthusiasts, and fans of the renowned driver.
