What is Trench Watch?
A trench watch is an early type of wristwatch closely associated with military use during the First World War. The term generally describes watches from the 1910s and early 1920s that combined a small watch movement with a case fitted for a wrist strap, producing a practical alternative to the pocket watch.
Trench watches occupy an important position in the transition from pocket watches to modern wristwatches. Wrist-worn watches existed before 1914 and were particularly established as jewellery and specialist timepieces, but wartime conditions demonstrated the practical advantages of reading the time without having to remove a watch from a pocket.
A soldier could check a wristwatch while keeping his hands relatively free for equipment, weapons, maps or signalling. Synchronised operations also made convenient access to time increasingly useful. These requirements helped accelerate the acceptance of wristwatches among men during and after the war.
There was no single standard trench-watch design. The term covers watches produced by different manufacturers and retailers, with considerable variation in cases, movements, dials, straps and protective features. Many examples nevertheless share recognisable characteristics: relatively small round cases, prominent Arabic numerals, separate seconds displays and wire lugs for attaching a leather strap.
The popular image of the trench watch as a product invented suddenly during the First World War is therefore too simple. Its development was gradual, and several elements of the wristwatch had already appeared before the conflict. What the war did was provide a powerful practical reason for wrist-worn timekeeping to expand.
From Pocket Watches to Wrist-Worn Timekeeping
Pocket watches dominated personal timekeeping for men during much of the nineteenth century. They were carried in a waistcoat or trouser pocket and commonly attached to clothing by a chain. This arrangement worked well in ordinary civilian life, but it was less convenient when the wearer needed to check the time quickly while performing another task.
Experiments with wrist-worn timepieces pre-date the First World War by decades. Watches mounted on bracelets were made during the nineteenth century, particularly for women, and wrist-worn watches also appeared in military contexts before 1914. The Boer War of 1899 to 1902 is frequently discussed in the history of military wristwatches because soldiers were already using watches adapted for wear on the wrist.
Early wristwatches were sometimes described as wristlets. Some were purpose-built, while others reflected the architecture of small pocket or pendant watches adapted to a strap. This helps explain several features found on surviving trench watches, including small movements and case proportions that differ from later purpose-designed men's wristwatches.
The First World War created conditions in which wrist-worn timekeeping had obvious practical advantages:
- A watch could be read without taking it out of a pocket.
- Officers could check time while handling maps, binoculars or other equipment.
- Timing became useful when coordinating movements and other planned military activity.
- Large Arabic numerals could improve rapid reading under difficult conditions.
- Luminous dial and hand materials could provide some visibility in darkness.
- Protective guards could reduce the risk of damage to the crystal while leaving the dial partly visible.
These advantages helped change perceptions of the wristwatch. A format that had previously been associated partly with women's jewellery and specialist applications increasingly became accepted as practical equipment for men.
The transformation was not immediate. Pocket watches remained widely used after the war, and early wristwatches continued to evolve throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Nevertheless, the wartime period became a decisive chapter in the wristwatch's development.
Cases, Dials and Protective Features
A typical trench watch is considerably smaller than many modern men's watches. Case diameters around the low 30 mm range are common, although surviving examples vary and measurements should not be treated as a universal specification.
Cases were produced in different materials and qualities. Silver and gold can be found on surviving watches, as can nickel and other base-metal cases. Because many watches were assembled and retailed through different commercial networks, the name on the dial does not always tell the complete story of who manufactured the movement or case.
Wire lugs are one of the most characteristic features. Rather than the more substantial integrated lugs familiar from later wristwatches, early examples often use metal loops soldered to the case. A leather strap passes between these loops to secure the watch to the wrist.
Dials frequently use large Arabic numerals and a separate small-seconds register, commonly at 6 o'clock. The position of the seconds display often reflects the architecture inherited from small pocket or pendant-watch movements.
Some trench watches were equipped with luminous numerals and hands. Radium-based luminous compounds became important during this period because they could glow without first being exposed to light. Surviving radium dials require appropriate caution today because radium is radioactive, even when the visible glow has greatly diminished.
Another distinctive accessory is the protective shrapnel guard. This is usually a metal cover or grille fitted above the crystal, with openings that allow the wearer to read the hands and numerals. Its purpose was to provide additional physical protection to the vulnerable glass.

Not every surviving watch combines all of these features. A shrapnel guard in particular should not be treated as a requirement for identifying a trench watch.
Movements and the Transitional Nature of Trench Watches
The movements found in trench watches reflect a period when wristwatch construction had not yet developed into the highly standardised architectures familiar from later decades.
Many early wristwatches used small manually wound movements related to those produced for ladies' pocket watches or pendant watches. The movement had to be compact enough for wrist wear, but automatic winding had not yet become a mainstream solution. The wearer therefore wound the watch regularly through the crown.
The position of the crown can provide clues to the origins and orientation of a movement, although it cannot by itself determine whether a watch began life as a wristwatch. Early cases and movements were produced in numerous configurations, and modern conversions further complicate identification.
Shock resistance was another major difference from later wristwatches. The balance staff contains extremely fine pivots that can be damaged by impact. Effective shock-protection systems did not become standard features of mechanical wristwatches during the trench-watch era, making many surviving movements more vulnerable to shocks than later watches.
Water resistance was similarly limited. Early cases were not constructed to the sealing standards associated with later sports watches. Dust and moisture could enter around the crown, crystal and case joints, contributing to the corrosion and dial deterioration visible on many surviving examples.
This transitional construction is one reason trench watches are historically valuable. They capture a period when watchmakers were adapting existing horological technology to a new method of wearing the watch. Later developments would produce stronger lugs, improved cases, better seals, shock-resistant balance bearings and movements designed specifically around the requirements of the wrist.
Identifying an Original Trench Watch
Authenticating a trench watch can be more difficult than identifying a later wristwatch with a clearly documented reference number. Watches from this period were often assembled from components supplied by different manufacturers, and dial signatures may identify a retailer rather than the movement maker.
More than a century of repairs creates an additional problem. Cases, movements, crowns, hands and dials may have been replaced. Some watches have also been assembled in more recent times from unrelated period components.
When assessing an example, useful areas to examine include:
- Whether the movement dimensions and orientation make sense for the case.
- Whether the movement, case and dial appear consistent in age and construction.
- Whether the wire lugs are original to the case or appear to have been added later.
- Whether case hallmarks, serial numbers or maker's marks provide useful dating evidence.
- Whether the dial has been refinished or fitted with replacement hands.
- Whether claimed military provenance is supported by documentation rather than appearance alone.
A watch should not automatically be described as a military-issued trench watch simply because it dates from the First World War period. Many wristwatches were privately purchased, and military personnel could obtain watches through commercial channels.
Similarly, an engraving does not necessarily prove military use. Genuine inscriptions can provide valuable provenance, but later engravings and undocumented family stories need to be evaluated cautiously.
Condition presents another challenge. Collectors may value originality more highly than cosmetic perfection, particularly when an untouched dial, period hands and original case have survived together. A heavily polished case or repainted dial may look cleaner while preserving less historical information.
Why the Trench Watch Matters in Watch History
The significance of the trench watch extends beyond military collecting. It represents one of the most important stages in the emergence of the men's wristwatch as the dominant form of personal mechanical timekeeping.
Many features that seem ordinary today were still developing during this period. Wearing a watch on a strap, positioning it for immediate visibility and designing the dial around rapid wrist-level reading all reflected a changing relationship between people and portable time.
The First World War did not invent the wristwatch, and no single manufacturer can reasonably be credited with creating the entire category during the conflict. Wrist-worn watches had a longer pre-war history. The war instead accelerated an existing development by demonstrating that the wrist could be a more practical location for a watch than the pocket in situations where rapid access mattered.
The influence continued into civilian watchmaking after 1918. During the following decades, wristwatches became increasingly purpose-built rather than adapted from earlier forms. Case construction improved, movement layouts evolved, and manufacturers developed watches specifically around the demands of everyday wrist wear.
For modern collectors, trench watches preserve evidence of that transition. Their wire lugs, enamel or metal dials, small hand-wound movements and occasional protective guards belong to a period before the basic architecture of the modern wristwatch had fully settled.
A genuine trench watch is therefore more than an unusually small vintage wristwatch. It belongs to a formative period when portable timekeeping was moving from the pocket to the wrist, and military experience during the First World War helped demonstrate why that change would become permanent.
