Omega Constellation Observatory Collection

Omega has introduced a new series within its Constellation collection, presenting the Constellation Observatory. This release marks a notable development, as it represents the first time that a two-hand watch has achieved Master Chronometer certification.

The collection revisits a design language that dates back to 1952, reinterpreted in a contemporary case available in stainless steel, gold and combined precious metal executions.

Case Design and Proportions

The case measures 39.4 mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.23 mm, while the lug-to-lug distance of 47.2 mm ensures balanced proportions on the wrist. Sapphire crystals are fitted on both sides, and the case is complemented by the curved lugs characteristic of earlier Constellation models.

This blend of vintage references and modern construction reinforces the continuity of the collection’s design identity.

Dial and Aesthetic Details

A key feature of the new series is the return of the Pie Pan dial, a defining element of historical Constellation models. In most versions, the outer edge of the dial is decorated with linear guilloché, adding structure and depth.

Applied hour markers adopt a kite-shaped form, echoing the faceted hands. The Constellation star remains positioned above 6 o’clock, while the collection name appears beneath the Omega logo, maintaining the familiar visual hierarchy.

Materials and Variations

The collection is offered in a wide range of materials and configurations.

Models crafted from Omega’s proprietary O-MEGASTEEL are available with silver, blue or green dials, as well as a version featuring a polished black ceramic dial. These watches are paired with alligator leather straps and feature gold-toned applied markers with matching PVD-treated hands.

Gold versions are produced using Omega’s proprietary alloys. The Moonshine gold model is offered with a matching dial and can be configured either on a leather strap or on a gold bracelet with a brick-style link construction inspired by early Constellation designs.

Sedna gold and Canopus gold variants also feature tone-on-tone dials and are presented on leather straps.

A more complex execution combines platinum and gold, bringing together multiple proprietary Omega alloys within a single collection.

Movement and Decoration

The watches are powered by two newly developed calibres derived from the 89xx series. Both movements feature a skeletonised rotor fitted with a medallion engraved with an observatory motif.

The calibre 8915 Grand Luxe is reserved for the platinum and gold version. It incorporates an 18-carat white gold medallion decorated using laser ablation, with aventurine and enamel used to depict a deep blue sky with eight stars. The observatory dome is rendered in translucent white enamel.

The calibre 8914 Standard powers the steel models and features a similar decorative approach, complemented by rhodium-plated components.

Master Chronometer Certification

The Observatory designation reflects the technical positioning of the collection. Despite the absence of a seconds hand, these watches are certified as Master Chronometers.

Unlike COSC certification, which evaluates uncased movements, the Master Chronometer standard tests fully assembled watches. It also imposes stricter rate tolerances, ranging from 0 to -5 seconds per day, compared to -4 to +6 seconds for COSC.

In addition, watches must demonstrate resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, while also undergoing testing for water resistance and power reserve.

Omega has further refined its testing process through the introduction of Dual Metric Technology. This system places the watch within a wireless testing module that records the sound of each escapement beat over a period of 25 days, while simultaneously monitoring environmental factors such as temperature, position, magnetic exposure and atmospheric pressure.

Pricing

Indicative pricing begins at approximately €10,700 for steel models on leather straps and €12,000 for versions with black ceramic dials. Precious metal versions range from approximately €37,300 to €58,200, depending on configuration.

A Contemporary Interpretation of a Classic Line

With the Constellation Observatory, Omega combines historical design cues with advanced certification standards and modern materials. The result is a collection that balances heritage and innovation, introducing a new level of technical credibility to the Constellation line.
