Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Dazzle Uses Laser Engraving to Disrupt Its Familiar Form

A 40mm Titanium Octo Finissimo With a 5.15mm Profile

The Octo Finissimo Dazzle is housed in a sandblasted titanium case measuring 40mm in diameter and just 5.15mm thick.

The visible surfaces of the case are covered by a geometric pattern that continues across the dial and integrated titanium bracelet. Laser engraving creates a network of intersecting shapes that visually breaks up the already complex, multi-faceted construction of the Octo Finissimo.

Instead of treating the case, dial and bracelet as separate visual elements, the pattern connects them into a single composition. The pattern makes the outlines and individual surfaces of the watch more difficult to distinguish visually.

The result is not conventional camouflage intended to conceal the watch. The engraving instead uses the principles behind disruptive patterning to change how the eye interprets its shape.

The Dazzle Pattern Has Its Roots in Naval Camouflage

The inspiration for the watch reaches back to the early 20th century and the development of disruptive camouflage for military vessels.

British zoologist John Graham Kerr proposed the use of strongly contrasting patterns on ships. The objective was not simply to make a vessel disappear against its surroundings. Instead, the disruptive graphics were intended to make its shape more difficult to interpret, complicating assessments of its distance and direction of travel.

The concept later found another application in the automotive industry. Development prototypes are commonly covered with complex patterns during testing to obscure their body contours and make the underlying design more difficult to identify.

Bvlgari applies a related visual principle to the Octo Finissimo Dazzle. Here, however, the pattern is decorative rather than functional camouflage.

Laser Engraving Changes the Perception of the Octo Finissimo

The Octo Finissimo is already characterised by a complex arrangement of angular and geometric surfaces. On the Dazzle edition, the laser-engraved motif adds another layer to this architecture.

Intersecting geometric forms extend from the case onto the dial and bracelet, disrupting the boundaries between individual components. The underlying Octo Finissimo silhouette remains unchanged, but the pattern alters how its facets and proportions are perceived.

This approach is particularly noticeable on the integrated bracelet, where the engraved design continues across multiple links rather than ending at the case.

Ultra-Thin BVL 138 Automatic Movement

The visual treatment is new, but the movement remains the familiar ultra-thin BVL 138 automatic calibre.

At just 2.23mm thick, the movement uses a platinum micro-rotor for automatic winding. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 60 hours.

Its functions comprise hours, minutes and seconds.

The movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback. Its finishing includes Geneva stripes, circular graining and bevelled edges.

Limited to 80 Pieces

Bvlgari will produce the Octo Finissimo Dazzle in a limited edition of 80 pieces. The model has an indicative price of €19,500.

Rather than changing the dimensions or mechanical architecture of the Octo Finissimo Automatic, Bvlgari has concentrated on its surfaces. The laser-engraved pattern extends continuously across the titanium case, dial and bracelet, using the visual principles of Dazzle camouflage to alter the perception of the Octo Finissimo's multi-faceted architecture.
