What is Lepine Layout?

Many of the principles used in modern mechanical watches originated not in wristwatches but in pocket watches developed centuries earlier. Among the most influential innovations was the movement architecture introduced by the French watchmaker Jean-Antoine Lépine during the second half of the eighteenth century. In a Lépine watch, the crown is positioned at 12 o'clock and the small seconds at 6 o'clock. This arrangement is intended for open-face pocket watches without a protective front cover.

A Savonnette movement is rotated approximately 90 degrees within the case. The crown is positioned at 3 o'clock while the small seconds generally appears at 6 o'clock when the hunter case is opened. This orientation allows the dial to face the user correctly after the hinged cover swings aside.

Many movements were specifically manufactured in one layout or the other, while some calibres could be adapted depending on the intended case design.
