Nevertheless, many important Swiss pocket watches retained gilt movements well into the nineteenth century, particularly those intended for export or observatory competition. The transition from gilt to rhodium therefore occurred gradually rather than suddenly.

Roger W. Smith and other English independent watchmakers frequently use gilt finishes inspired by eighteenth-century English pocket watches. Their movements combine gilded plates with frosted surfaces, hand engraving and traditional architecture that closely reflects historical construction methods.
Some limited-edition watches produced by Swiss manufacturers also employ gilt finishes to celebrate historically significant calibres or anniversaries. In these cases, the objective is not simply visual nostalgia but historical accuracy.
The renewed interest in traditional finishing demonstrates that collectors increasingly appreciate movement decoration as an important part of horological heritage rather than merely an industrial manufacturing process.
How Collectors Assess Gilt Movements
Collectors evaluating historical watches pay close attention to the condition of the gilt finish because it often provides valuable information about originality and previous restoration.
An authentic gilt movement typically develops a gentle patina over decades while retaining its characteristic golden colour. Excessive polishing, aggressive cleaning or inappropriate restoration may damage the original surface, reducing historical authenticity.
Collectors also examine whether the colour remains consistent across bridges and plates. Significant differences may indicate replacement components or later refinishing.
